Is today the 1st of April or am i actually starting to see things because i have that friday feeling?
He is only in office since January, and has yet to achieve anything. Lads surely there is someone more entitled to it this year?
Not that i have anything against Obama, but we need a few years before we know what he is really made off!!!!

just found it on the net
here we go
quote:
US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's peace prize. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia had been among the favourites.

This just proves everything I've ever believed about Obama. Its blind adoration of a ordinary leader with no special abilities, except the ability to make rational people adore him.

If he had a conscience he'd refuse it and give it Morgan Tsvangirai a key figure in the opposition to President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

But he'll keep it.

yep have to agree with ya's!!

Think there is a mentality that because he became president his job is done. Becoming president is only the beginning not the end!! The likes of John Hume who won the nobel peace prize had devoted his life to peace and reconciliation. Possibily in the future obama might be worthy off this honour not now.

He was Time man of the year - That was deserved not the nobel peace prize!!

as for the rest of the nominees got this from the interweb!!

- A record 205 candidates are in the running for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Institute said on Friday, with US President Barak Obama and France's Nicolas Sarkozy known to be on the list.

"We have received the names of 205 candidates, including 33 organisations," Geir Lundestad, the head of the Nobel Institute, told AFP.

"This is a new record," exceeding the 199 candidates competing for the prestigious prize in 2005, he said.

The names of nominees are kept secret by the institute for 50 years. But those who are entitled to nominate are allowed to reveal the name of the person or organisation they have proposed, if they wish to do so.

Have to say am in definite agreement with ye all here, WTF???? I'm by no means anti-Obama, but seriously, what has he done worthy of such a prestigious prize? There are so many more worthy individuals who I'm sure were nominated, its ridiculous. I'd have thought the Nobel Committee were above this kind of thing.....

Rebel has found the reason. The disgraceful invasion by Kanye West of the sovereign territory of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video awards was quickly resolved by the great peace making president.

Beyonce helped as well.

Why wasn't she named as co recipient?

here's a few quota i've found on the net to explain why obama has got this prize

quote:
"The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks."

quote:
"The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given to someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace,"

quote:
"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself,"

quote:
"[Obama] has shown an unshakeable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts."

quote:
The Norwegian Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said, "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future."

so what if obama got the award, i say fair play to him, why begrudge the man as so many on here wish to do. and for those who say he's only been in office since january 20th well morgan Tsvangirai was only sworn in as the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe on 11 February.

If Obama was in your position and you were in his I think he would be saying something different i.e. well-wishing. I think it's uncommon qualities like this that make him well-liked. Also he is in an extraordinary position, and has risen to this position, with this attitude and that speaks volumes.

If you are in the mood for criticing someone it should be the Norweigan committee afterall it was there decision. Obama is has just being doing his job and is probably as suprised by this as you and I are.

Point well made and taken Best.Your observation about Obama is very correct. If I got the award yes he would wish me well, he's that kinda guy.

But I don't deserve a Nobel Peace Prize. I've never created peace ever in my life!!

It would be wrong for me to take it and get wished well.

You're right about criticizing the Nobel committee. Were they totally drunk or something? But Obama still could refuse it and that would show good charactor on his part.

Finally my suggestion that President Obama share his Nobel Peace Prize with Beyonce was unfair..I take it back Wink

It gets worse......

Apparently nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize closed 12 days after Obama took office.

Former President Jimmy Carter got an award in 2002 after decades of work for peace

Current President Barrack Obama got an award in 2009 after 12 days of "work" for peace.

Heard him on the radio.

He sounds embarrassed.

This is about world peace. Obama was given the award partly to recognise the contribution he has made to world peace. The greatest part of that contribution was probably in changing the atmosphere in the world community. Think back to before Obama toook office when President Bush was in charge. His eight years in office and contribution to the world was too rile and aggrevate large parts of the world particularly the Muslim world. Obama, through gestures like the Cairo speach, is doing what he can to change the environment he inherited and for the large part he is being well received. Secondly, the was given this award to help him enhance what he has been, and is trying to achieve.

For those two reasons I think the Nobel committee were smart in their choice. They were thinking less of the prestige this award would bring to Obama and more of the credability it would give him in bringing about greater peace in today's world.

Totally agree with your comment Best, its not what Obama has done, but what he can do!!

By giving him this award it focuses people, the world, on the fact this man got the nobel peace prize for what he can and talks about doing. By giving him the award early it'll put the imputus on him to live to his word.

Must admit, his gesture of donating the $1.4 million to charity went down well also!!

This is about world peace. i think we both agree on that statement.

But the fact remains we don't know his record because we haven't lived through what he has achieved.

Going back to the 12 days in office thing. This just proves how utterly empty, pathetic, daft looking, needy, and self serving, this award has become.

But it is also scary that you're almost a social pariah to criticize Obama. Everyone has to first say "i love Obama but...."

Let me try to be balanced for a minute. Here's what I reckon;I don't like alot of his domestic and foreign policy (his healthcare plan is in the land of make-believe, and he is too scared to stand up to Russia) but i do give him credit on Iraq where he's doing a great job, and he's doing his best in Afghanistan. His election also provides great hope to those in the African American community which was badly needed in America.

Why can't everyone give a balanced view on Obama and not just praise him all the time?

The Nobel Peace Prize has lost all credibility.

Username 1 i'm going to give you what your looking for,
I don't love Obama, in fact if I was American i'd of probably voted for John MaCane cuz he had the coolest vidio ever, which give me the impression the the character John MaClane out of Die Heard was based on him.

I disagrees also with Obama receiving this award, and believe it lowers the stranded.

Obama is a great man, he is a "near" symbol for world peace and chance. Though what if Iran, hadn't Opened up there to inspections, or if God forbid something happens before his rain is over? can we take the award back off him?

the argument is not about whether obama is a great guy or a nice person its about what he has done as an individual to contribute to the betterment of the world, so people dont live in fear and so that peace reigns supreme, that civil rights are not just a word used for political popularity but an actual reality...to date barck obama has done none of this or not enough to recieve such a prestiguous award, i dont agree that by saying he will do it and the award will give him a better footing for the future is a strong enough reason, the giving of a nobel peace prize shouldnt be based on a smart choice it should be based on actions not words...i like obama i do but i think he got it too early...i say im going to go to zimbabwe and bring down robert mugagbe should i get the award next year???actions not words, i always held the nobel peace prize in high esteem but the idea they gave the award to someone to boost their popularity sickens me...

Words can be powerful TipTop. An attitude of disrespect, arrogence, and a narrow-minded outlook can cause people to dislike, distrust and seek to destroy you. Again I'm talking about Bush. His attitude made the world and increasingly fragile and fragmented place. He also had actions which did likewise with successive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Obama spoke out at the time against the wars and you would have to assume if he was in office wouldn't have done what Bush did. Obama is now working on undoing the actions of Bush by withdrawing troops in these countries which are significant actions.

Also someone must have nominated Obama for the Nobel award for things that he said he was inteneding to do. The Nobel committee would have received this nomination and kept a check htis progress. I think that this award is given out for attempts to increase world peace in the last 12 months and not over a lifetime but I could be off the mark here.
